merlinbudapest.org is an independent, unofficial site documenting the history of the Merlin Theatre (Merlin Színház), which ran at Gerlóczy utca 4 in Budapest from 1991 to 2011. We are not the theatre, we never were, and we have no connection to its founders, the Budapest municipality, or whoever operates the renovated building today. No tickets, no box office, no bookings — just the history, sourced and dated.
Why this site exists
This domain was the venue’s own web address in its later years — the Wayback Machine holds its programme pages, club-night listings and drinks menu from 2006 to 2011. After the theatre closed, the domain lapsed and passed through other hands, including a spell as a how-to blog. Its current publisher decided the address should carry the story of the place it is named after: what the Merlin was, why it mattered, when it closed, and what stands at the address now. How we work
Every dated claim is checked against at least two independent sources — contemporaneous press, municipal releases, archival snapshots of the venue’s own site — and single-source claims are attributed in the text rather than asserted. Who publishes this site
Merlin Budapest is run by a small independent publishing team. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to the Merlin Színház, its former directors, the City of Budapest, or the current operators of Gerlóczy utca 4. “Merlin Színház” is used here only to name and describe the historical venue.
The older guides
Before the pivot to venue history, this site published step-by-step Facebook and Messenger guides. The ones that still work are kept in the guides archive, clearly separated from the history content, and are updated or retired as they age.
